Samford takes SoCon tournament championship

The Samford volleyball team claimed its first Southern Conference tournament championship, defeating the College of Charleston 3-0. The Bulldogs hosted the three-day tournament at the Pete Hanna Center on the Samford campus.

Samford's Pat Sullivan honored by Auburn; Tigers defeat Bulldogs 35-16

 Samford fell to the Auburn Tigers 35-16 in the season finale for the Bulldogs. Samford trailed Auburn 21-16 in the 4th quarter before two late scores sealed the win for the Tigers.

Prior to the game, Samford head coach Pat Sullivan was honored by Auburn, where he won the Heisman Trophy as quarterback in 1971. Auburn public address announcer Ric Smith:

Martin Newton named Samford Athletics Director

Martin Newton has been named the new Director of Athletics for Samford University. Newton is currently the Director of Men's Basketball Operations at the University of Kentucky. He is a 1983 Samford graduate, former basketball player, and the son of former SEC basketball coach and athletics director C.M. Newton.

Newton gave introductory remarks at Samford on March 9, 2011, following an introduction from Vice President for Business Affairs Buck Brock:

The Samford women's basketball team defeated top-seeded Appalachian State 57-54 to win its first conference championship in program history.

SoCon Tournament: Women advance to championship with 68-66 OT win over host UTC

Samford will play in the Southern Conference Tournament championship game after defeating the host Chattanooga Mocs 68-66 in an overtime thriller.

Senior guard Emily London led all scorers with 21 points. Fellow senior Savannah Hill added 20. After the game, head coach Mike Morris and London spoke with the media:

SoCon Tournament: Furman defeats Samford men 61-48

The Samford men's basketball season ended on March 4, 2011, following a 61-48 loss to Furman. After the game, head coach Jimmy Tillette addressed the media:

SoCon Tournament: Women defeat Western Carolina 57-48

The second-seeded Samford women's basketball team opened play in the SoCon Tournament with a 57-48 win over #10 Western Carolina. Guard Jazmine Powers sparked the Bulldogs, coming off the bench for 8 points and 3 steals. Senior forward Savannah Hill led all scorers with 17 points. Conference player of the year Emily London added 15.

Samford women close regular season with road win over UNCG

The Samford women's basketball team overcame slow start to defeat UNCG 59-52 on Feb. 21, 2011, in the final regular season game. The Bulldogs finish the season 22-7 overall and 15-5 in the SoCon, and will enter the SoCon Basketball Tournament Friday, March 4 as the #2 seed.
